I am a self-taught freelance bassist, comfortable in many settings from the written and arranged to full-on improvisation. I took up double bass as a teenager in the early 1980s and played in a variety of bands before becoming freelance in the early 1990s.
I also play bass guitar and guitar.
My first major session was with pop icon Morrissey in December 1990. I was also a member of his band (bass guitar and double bass) from 1993-97, playing on several albums and singles including his masterpiece, “Vauxhall and I”, rightly regarded as a classic. During this time I also got to work with Siouxsie Sioux and Adam Ant. From 2000-2005 I was with highly regarded singer/songwriter and former Mercury Prize nominee Kathryn Williams, recording five albums and touring the UK and Europe.
I’ve also had the pleasure of gigging and/or recording with Albert Lee, Lady Miss Kier (her heart was all groove!), Ed Sheehan, Charlie Simpson, Sneaker Pimps, Billie Ray Martin, Thea Gilmore, Ed Harcourt, James Hunter, the late great Johnnie Johnson (Chuck Berry’s piano man), John Primer (Chicago Bluesman,Muddy Waters’ last band), PP. Arnold, Jerry Donohue, Dave Swarbrick, Robyn Hitchcock, most of Bellowhead, Boo Hewerdine, Mark Nevin, Ivor Novello nominee’s The Leisure Society, The Memory Band, Pete Molinari, BJ Cole, Sid Griffin Solo and with The Coal Porters, Kirsty Mcgee, Lisa Knapp, Jack Cheshire, Sam Carter, Nancy Wallace, Jason Steel, Fionn Regan, Alex Highton, David Thomas Broughton, Liz Green, The Accidental, Essie Jain, Sam Lee (Mercury Nominee), Tom Paley, Peggy Seeger, Phil ‘Swill’ Odgers,Bonnie Dobson, Amanda Pearcey, Amelia White and others besides.
